2013 Rooted

Dimensional layering in a diorama or shadow box—a “picture” with a perspective—has always been an intriguing construction.

Rooted illustrates a cycle of renewal in dimensional cross section: what sits below connects to and inspires what flourishes above. The layout was influenced by the size of a 15-stick Slim Pack™ of Wrigley’s™ Big Red® gum. Frames are balsa wood, cut and glued, with a card stock tray fitted inside. The tray is the backing and support for the attached contents. In the lower area of the frame, the treat sits snugly within equal margins of “earth”—layers of pinked felt—and it is released with a pull of the floss. In the upper area of the frame, the plant is built with heart-shaped felt pieces, hand-stitched and stuffed with fiberfill. Paper-wrapped crafting wire is inserted, styled, and glued in place as stems. Craft wire coils are “roots” reaching down for nutrients. Ribbon or decorative paper and craft grass back the plant. A small ornamental bird tucks into a sheltering space.
